Case Study: Structured-Light Stereovision System for Parcel and Package 3D Dimensioning

Optics for Hire designed and prototyped a structured-light stereovision system for real-time 3D package dimensioning on warehouse conveyor lines. The project included ZEMAX optical modeling, custom subpixel stereo matching algorithm development in MATLAB, and bench-top prototype validation, achieving 0.9 mm depth accuracy across a 700–1500 mm working range within a 14–16 week engagement.

What We’re Reading: 3D Display Advances
Gregg Favalora shares notes on recent developments in autostereoscopic and 3D display technology, including 360-degree tabletop displays, MIT Media Lab’s computational displays, free-form optics for head-worn displays, and the ongoing challenge of improving spatial light modulator bandwidth.

Confocal Microscope Design: Explained

Confocal Microscope Design

A confocal microscope is a type of microscopy that uses a focused laser beam to illuminate a sample and a pinhole aperture to eliminate out-of-focus light, resulting in high-resolution images with improved contrast and clarity.. The name “confocal” refers to the use of a pinhole aperture to achieve optical sectioning of the specimen. Confocal microscopy […]

Phase Shift Method for distance measurement

Optical techniques for distance measurement offer plenty of uses and applications. These techniques are able to measure the distance between two objects without touching them, making them perfect for a variety of situations. Optical techniques are usually the best solution when needing a noncontact method that’s fast or automated. For example, they are often used […]
