Lens Testing & MTF Measurement FAQs
What types of optical tests do you perform?
Our in-house metrology lab performs a comprehensive range of optical tests including MTF (Modulation Transfer Function), USAF 1951 resolution, effective focal length (EFL), distortion mapping, field curvature, relative illumination, and chromatic aberration analysis. Each test delivers precise, quantitative data so you can validate lens performance against your specifications.
How does MTF testing work and what does it measure?
MTF testing measures how well a lens transfers contrast from the object to the image at different spatial frequencies. A higher MTF value at a given frequency means the lens reproduces finer detail more faithfully. We test across multiple field positions and frequencies to give you a complete picture of lens performance — from center sharpness to edge quality.
What is the turnaround time for lens testing?
Most standard tests are completed within a few business days. The process is straightforward: ship us your lens, we run the tests, and you receive a comprehensive report with quantitative data, charts, and expert analysis.
Can you test both prototype and production lenses?
Absolutely. We test everything from early-stage prototypes to high-volume production lenses. Our services support prototype validation, incoming quality inspection, lot sampling, and vendor qualification across industries including medical devices, defense and aerospace, consumer electronics, automotive, and industrial imaging.
What wavelength ranges can your metrology lab accommodate?
Our metrology lab is equipped to test lenses across a 400–1000 nm wavelength range, covering the visible spectrum and into the near-infrared. This allows us to characterize lenses designed for a wide variety of applications, from standard visible-light imaging to NIR sensing and machine vision systems.
